Recognition of prior learning (RPL)

Recognition of prior learning, or RPL, is the assessment of a learner's existing skills and knowledge against the requirements of a unit, so they can be recognised without repeating training. Cohiva Campus is a student management system and LMS for Australian RTOs with a data-driven AVETMISS compliance engine.

What recognition of prior learning is

Recognition of prior learning, usually shortened to RPL, is the assessment of a learner's existing skills and knowledge against the requirements of a unit of competency. Rather than asking someone to complete training in something they can already do, an RTO assesses the evidence they bring, from work experience, earlier study or other learning, and recognises the competency if it meets the standard. The learner gets credit for what they already know, and the RTO records the outcome the same way it records any other result.

RPL matters because many vocational learners are not starting from scratch. An experienced worker enrolling in a qualification may already meet several of its units. RPL gives them a fair path to recognition and saves them repeating training, while keeping the standard intact, because the assessment still has to be satisfied. For the RTO, an RPL outcome is a recorded result at the unit level, with the same reporting obligations as a result achieved through training and assessment.

Recognition of prior learning in the Cohiva platform

Cohiva Campus is a student management system and LMS for Australian registered training organisations, built around a data-driven AVETMISS compliance engine. Because Campus tracks enrolment and outcomes at the unit level, an RPL outcome is recorded against the same student and unit as any other result and feeds the same NAT file reporting to NCVER.

For a compliance manager, that keeps RPL results consistent with the rest of the student record. To see how it works, explore Campus.

Frequently asked questions

What is recognition of prior learning?
The assessment of a learner's existing skills and knowledge against a unit, so they can be recognised without repeating training.
Who uses RPL?

Which Cohiva product records RPL outcomes?
Cohiva Campus manages student records and outcomes for Australian registered training organisations.
Does RPL still need to be reported?
